Literacy

Literacy

This relief hangs on the library’s wall here in Oxford, New York. It has hung here, in the children’s room, at the very least, since I was old enough to get a library card, and choose books to read.

This reminds me of the holiday to come. Peace on earth, education through reading. Reading about the past, reading about poetry, history, the imagination of fiction.

It also points to the future, not only the written word, recorded on parchment and books, but through the energy of the internet, making the world a smaller place, bringing all people together with common love of education.

Yes, there are bad things out there. Choose the good. Grow with it.

  1. Earlier generations believed in the power of literacy and its ability to show us that, underneath the obvious differences, we are really all the same.

A fitting image for this time of year and this time of humanity.
