  1. They are called samaras – not sure why. A specific kind of winged fruit that is structured to flutterd down and (mostly) land with the seed down into contact with the soil – waiting to germinate and make more maples.

    Think of the millions of them that flutter down every autumn and how few actually grow into all the promise they hold. Amazing.
